Scott Tinkler about Apollo, Achilles and Academica Trumpets

Today I had the extreme pleasure of testing some new model Schagerl Trumpets, the Achilles and the Apollo, as well as the academica series.

With every Schagerl horn, the first note is immediate. The response of Schagerl instruments across the range is absolutely fantastic. Every horn I've played has this response and is so beautifully in tune, so much so that the use of the valve slides in the lower register is disturbingly nominal. Once again, the Achilles and the Apollo have these Schagerl trademarks.

The Apollo was the more focused of the 2 horns, it was as if the notes were already there and all I had to do was blow. There is a full core of sound with wonderful rich qualities that hold together at any volume. This is a very stable horn that will please the classically trained player.

The Achilles was like a wild child, this horn wants to soar over a big band or wail in a Latin band. It has the characteristic response and tuning yet the feel is a little looser and when pushed it opens up with a beautiful rich, bright sound. I imagine that lead and commercial players, or the classical player who like more edge, will love this exciting horn .

A surprise for me was the academica series trumpet. This is supposed to be student model horn but I'm not sure why. This horn plays beautifully and is by far the best instrument I've ever played in that price bracket. It has a wonderful response and tuning, better than most professional horns I've played, and I would recommend it to any part time or intermediate player who wants a horn that will allow for years of development in their playing.

The bottom line, Schagerl Trumpets play more in tune and are the most responsive, of any instruments I've ever had the pleasure to play.
The only thing that almost outshines the way they play is the quality of the finish on these horns, the craftsmanship and care taken is second to none. With the wide range now on offer for the professional and student, all that is left is to decide is which one suits your playing style.
